Anyhoo, we got up at the crack of dawn and got on the road around 7:15am. The boys knew we were going camping, but had no idea where. When their DVD player failed about 45 mins into the drive, we thought they were going to throw in the proverbial towel. However, they had iPhone, leapsters, and one DSI to play with, and they made it work!
We pulled over when we saw the sign...
Reed, with the best timing in the world shouted out "yay! Kentucky! This will be my second time!!!" This was the reason we brought them here in the first place. Reed has been very adamant about the fact that he's been to Kentucky...none of us remember, but he swears up and down that he's been there before and only Lindara remembers. Ok! Whatever, now he really has been there!
We set up camp on the Nolin Lake! Really! Nolin Lake is just outside of Lindseyville where Larry's Lamps has a shop downtown. We then saw a sign in Mammoth Cave for Reed Torches. We couldn't believe all the similarities!! We thought this to be a good omen for the trip...maybe it should have been a sign to pick up extra rain gear! It was nice and hot throughout the day as we set up camp, went swimming in the lake, and made dinner.
A little chicken and steak k-bobs on the grill, rice on the camping stove, watermelon on the side and s'mores to round out the nights eats. After a quick shower in the community bathhouse (it actually was pretty clean, surprisingly) it was off to bed for the kiddies. The adults weren't far behind because we were all exhausted. About an hour into our slumber, the wind started. Then it sprinkled just a tad, and then an all out thunder/lighting/storm passed over...all...night...long! The rain started around midnight and ended around 6am, and we were all soaked along with the majority of our belongings! Seeing as the lot of us aren't avid campers, we decided not to see if we'd get stormed on again the following night, and packed up camp to head home. The next post will show Mammoth Cave as we couldn't pass up an opportunity to see the biggest caves known to man while we were in the area.
Good bye for now, Kentucky!!
